ASK YOUR VET:
What should we keep in mind with our pets to keep them safe over the summer heat.
Heat: Walk your dog during morning and evenings and avoid long walks during the hottest times of the day.
How much and when to walk.
Hot summer days can cause pavement on sidewalks, roads and parking lots extra hot which often burn our pet’s paw pads. Encourage your pet to walk on grass and avoid going on long walks during the hottest times of the day. If your pet is used to exercise such as long runs there are special boots to avoid paw pad burns. Certain breeds such as brachycephalic breeds (Bulldogs, Frenchies, Shih tzus etc) are more likely to suffer from heat stroke and should not be exercised during hot summer days.
Water intake. Have fresh water available for your pets at all times, especially if they are outside on a hot day. Water intake helps your pet regulate their temperature, avoid dehydration and heat stroke.
Swimming- what to keep in mind when swimming in a pool, lake or ocean. Pets can safely enjoy swimming under supervision. Make sure your pet knows how to safely exit the pool, show them where the steps to exit are. It is best to use a safety life-vest for dogs when swimming and especially if swimming in lakes and the ocean.
TRUTH OR MYTH:
Should dogs get their hair cut shorter during the summer to avoid getting too hot?
Dogs with thick fur do not have different grooming requirements during the summer compared to the rest of the year. Dogs naturally shed their winter coats during spring. Many families prefer that their pets have short hair cuts during the summer since it is generally easier to maintain when pets are swimming and visiting the beach often. It is most important to keep your pet on safe and effective parasite preventatives during the summer since they are more likely to be outdoors and get fleas, ticks, or heartworms.
